Why is concentric hanging preferred?

Concentric loading prevents torsion (twisting forces) on the joist chord, protecting its structural integrity. By placing the hanger and rod directly inside the gap between chord angles, MCL Hangers distribute weight evenly from top or bottom chords without rotating during tightening.

Which MCL Hanger should I use?

Choose your hanger based on chord gap and manufacturer:

  • For Gap & Chord Type: Use M1 or M2 for standard angle iron chords (0.85″–1.25″ gap). Use M2 for cold-formed top chords, and M1 for strut bars.
  • By Manufacturer: Use M1 for Nucor Vulcraft and Canam Buildings (narrower gap). Use M2 for New Millennium (wider gap).

Do MCL Hangers work with common joists?

Yes. MCL Hangers were developed using open web steel joists from all major U.S. and Canadian manufacturers. They are designed to fit any open web steel joist with a chord gap width ranging from 0.85″ to 1.25″ (or 0.92″ to 1.25″ for cold-formed chords).

Can they be used on top and bottom chords?

Yes. MCL Hangers are designed to be installed on both top and bottom chords. Threaded MCL Hangers (like M2) are often quickest and easiest on the top chord. Both M1 and M2 work equally well on the bottom chord because it is easily accessible from both above and below.

What decking profiles are supported?

On top chords, MCL Hangers are compatible with F, B, N, C, W and P style decking profiles. The spatial clearance above the chord in these standard profiles provides enough room to insert and rotate the hanger into place.
